Large trucks on Texas highways can be extremely dangerous. 18-wheeler "semi-trailer" trucks, delivery vehicles, buses, construction trucks and other commercial vehicles are much larger and heavier than the average car. The large size, long stopping distances and skill required to handle these trucks make them potentially lethal for Texas drivers. Combines those traits with the long hours of driving by many drivers and the sometimes less than perfect maintenance of these vehicles can lead to tragedy. The Texas Department of Transportaton reports that for the year 2011 Travis County, Texas had 496 large truck ("commercial motor vehicle") crashes. Of those truck crashes, 108 were serious injury crashes resulting in 154 serious injuries. 6 of these Travis County, Texas truck crashes resulted in 7 deaths.
