As a San Marcos car crash attorney, I often work with clients who have been rear-ended. These accidents can cause serious head, neck and back injuries even when the vehicles involved are moving slowly. The most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of injury in any motor vehicle accident is to wear your seat belt every time you get into a car. You should also be sure to adjust your headrest and seatback position.

Headrest Position

During a rear-end collision, the forward motion of the vehicle seat into the occupant’s torso causes the body to raise upwards against the seat, called ramping. This force can overextend the neck and increase the chance of a neck injury.

Many people do not realize that the headrest is actually an important vehicle safety feature. Left in the lowest position, it actually increases the ramping effect. The head is thrown back and over the headrest before whipping forward. Positioned properly, the headrest holds the head in place upon impact and reduces injuries caused by ramping. Every time you get into the car, you should check to see that your headrest is properly adjusted. The headrest should be level with the top of your ears and as close to the back of your head as you can get it.

Seatback Position

Seatbacks that are set in a reclined position put too much distance between your head and the seat and allow for more ramping in the event of a rear-end collision. Like the headrest, you should adjust it every time you get behind the wheel. The seatback should be upright enough to allow for two inches between the back of your head and the headrest.

While many people do not realize it, a properly adjusted headrest and seatback position will protect you from head, neck and back injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.
