Distracted driving includes more than just texting while driving. Distracted driving is driving while doing any other activity that takes your attention away from driving. Distracted driving can greatly increase the chance of a motor vehicle crash. This includes eating, taking phone calls, reading, adjusting the radio, looking at social media, using the GPS, looking down, etc. rather than focusing on driving. Eliminating distractions in your own car is important, but what about everyone around you?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3,477 lives in 2015 alone.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) leads the national effort to save lives by preventing this dangerous behavior. According to the NHTSA, during daylight hours, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving. That creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. Teens were the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes.

Many times a thorough investigation of an accident reveals that distracted driving was a factor in the crash. For further information regarding distracted driving, or if you were injured by a distracted driver, contact our office at 512-472-7799.
